Does my site backup automatically?

Surprisingly the answer is likely not.

A complete backup of your website makes it possible to quickly and easily recover your website when necessary. Why is it important to backup your website? Here are a few reasons why implementing a solid backup strategy for your website is important.

Limit downtime. Although it is not a common occurrence, website failures do occur. Should your website or the server hosting your website experience a failure, a complete system backup is the best means to limit the downtime. Obviously a backup will allow you to quickly recover your website which thereby restores access to your customers. Our experience is that our customers may have an indifferent attitude towards downtime of their website up until the moment they are down. Even if your website serves merely as an online business card for your company it is important to your company and ours that your site remains up and available. We at B-Web take downtime seriously. Very seriously.

Recover from errors. Sometimes human errors occur while updating a live website. Occasionally the specific change made which is causing the issue cannot be identified. Even authorized changes can render a site unusable or unavailable and a complete site backup provides a means by which your site can be returned to the state prior to the changes.

Recover from site compromise. Any software can be compromised by hackers and your website is no exception. In many cases if your website is compromised by hackers the result can be damaging to your business and it is important to understand this damage is not limited exclusively to the site content which is displayed to your customers. A backup allows you to restore to a point in time prior to the compromise, provided your backups are still available and backup retention is adequate.

Help prevent or minimize data loss. Many websites are static and require only infrequent changes to the website itself. However, many websites such as e-commerce sites have databases of user data which is vital to protect. A backup of a website protects against loss of data by allowing restoration of the databases and other dynamically updated data. It is important to understand the recovery point objective and create a backup plan with the necessary frequency that addresses your requirements.

Recover from problems created by an update. System software and in particular WordPress plugins themselves require frequent updates in order to stay secure because these are the primary sources of compromise on a WordPress website. A complete site backup can be used to restore a website to a state prior to an update in the event an update impacts the site negatively.

Assist with creating a development environment. Sometimes changes are made to a live website. This is not necessarily a best practice; many companies insist that changes and testing of new changes be first implemented on a development or test server. A website backup provides an easy means by which a development environment can be created so changes can be tested prior to going live. Once testing is complete that same backup software can be used to create another backup and then restore the tested changes to your production server.

Assist with migrating your website. A backup makes it easy to migrate your site from one hosting provider to another.
